Jessica Pisano (eldest of four; born within a family of artists: sculptors, photographers, graphic designers, film directors/producers, musicians, and illustrators. So, inherently I had no choice but to become an artist. And I’m glad I did.
Educational background:
- BA in Drawing and Photography, Lewis & Clark College – Portland, OR (1995-1999)
- Fine Art study abroad program, Lorenzo deMedici School – Florence, Italy (1997)
- Graphic Design, continuing education, Rhode Island School of Design – Providence, RI (2000)
- MA in Art Administration, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago – Chicago, IL (2000-2002)
Things that inspire me: big open skies, sunny days at the beach (any kind of day at the beach). good food, good wine, good conversation (all together: even better). early mornings exploring the new england coast with my camera. nature walks. gallery walks. museum visits. traveling: east coast, west coast, any coast…water keeps me calm and inspired.
A bit about my work: I start out by using my camera to capture a memory. Everywhere I go I bring my camera along with me. Along with pulling from memory I use my photographs back in the studio as a reference for creating my mixed media paintings.
I’m most interested in the concept of time and how materials (man-made or those found in nature) weather as it ages. I work with many mediums to produce a patina that’s symbolic to the notion of time. The materials that I combine to achieve this is acrylic, oil, silver & gold leaf and various textural pastes. I paint on baltic birch wood panels. The completed paintings are finished with a UV protective gloss varnish.
“If you look closely, there’s a dance in every tree, a song within every grassy field, and a story behind each ocean wave — countless gestures and poses within nature’s landscape, inspiring me to capture and paint.” ~ Jessica Pisano
