Carpe Diem: Seize the Day! This motto is what my father is known for within our family. So much so that he had rings made up for each of us with the “carpe diem” inscribed on them. So, over the years, it has been my intention to implement this very notion EVERY day….but life happens, and some days just end up being less “carpe diem” days than others. It’s far easier for me to seize the day in the summer vs the winter; and this is solely because I have what you call S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder). For those of you who live out in sunny California, you’re probably not as familiar with this affliction as are my other fellow New Englanders. But today we had a gorgeous day over here in RI; and so….when a girl with S.A.D is given a mid-November day full of SUNSHINE…what does she do!? Yep, she spends it outside.

So i took my dog Kona and my step-mom’s dog Bones (i’m dog sitting at the moment while she’s in California!) out and into the parks and beaches of Newport. The dogs are now sun-drenched and happy — and so am i.

Bones (in the foreground) has this thing with the ocean. And when I say “thing,” I mean “a force has taken over his body” and he’ll do anything to try and digest the entire ocean. My guess is that he looks at the ocean as a herd of sheep and the only way to make the sheep (otherwise known as waves) to stop rollin’ in, is to well….eat them. So you can see in this picture clearly what he’s thinking of doing with those waves. The only problem is, those waves are about 25ft off that cliff he’s perched on top of. Hence, the really long leash i have him on which is securely attached to a pole.

And…being an artist who regularly paints images of flowers – I couldn’t help but to notice how amazing these hydrangeas are. And, they’re from our backyard! Ironically, I remembered that my parents gave me this vase during my first art opening at Belushi Pisano Gallery. Five years ago next month. Wow. Time is flyin’ on by — so my suggestion is to Carpe Diem!

As for this blog….it’s still gonna keep on being what it is – only better! I just decided to recreate it. I’m going to take a more casual ‘journal-like’ approach to it. Which means, i’ll be blogging a whole lot more. More about art – and not just mine. More about other happenings — both in and out of my studio. And, more about stuff — all sorts of stuff. I’m excited to share the things that I experience and enjoy on a daily basis; what inspires me as an artist, a wife and a dog-mom. THAT is what a “blog” is all about, right?

My hand-painted B&W Floral series will be in a four person show at River Gallery in the Bluff View Art District in Chattanooga, TN. I’ve been working on a new body of work lately and it’s all about trees. A decade ago I started out shooting landscapes and now I’m back to where I started from. Trees, like flowers, are gorgeous subject matters to paint. They stand with interesting poses and gestures – a language all of their own. I’m very excited to be outside and shooting landscapes again! I’ve got a few shows coming up this year and I’m looking forward to showcasing this new body of work.
